At the end of 1998 an open call appeared in the newspapers Algemeen Dagblad, de Volkskrant, NRC Handelsblad, Trouw, Rotterdams Dagblad, Het Parool, De Dordtenaar and Rijn and Gouwe. Readers of these newspapers were urged to send in their most precious photographs from this century's family album. No less than 70,000 photographs, with accompanying captions, reached the editors. Almost 500 photos were chosen from this entry.
