As soon as photography was invented, many travellers visited Italy as "photographers": following the example of their Italian colleagues, foreign photographers took over the cities and sites that for centuries had offered the views immortalized by the travellers on the Grand Tour. The first photographs of ancient ruins, churches, squares and palaces renewed the vision of the "beautiful paese".
