Ballen, Roger - Outland

The culmination of nearly 20 years of work, Outland marked Ballen's move from documentary photography into the realms of fiction and propelled him into the international spotlight. Disturbing, exciting and impossible to forget, Ballen's images captured people living on the fringes of South African society.

Roger Ballen (New York, 1950) is an American photographer. Ballen has lived and worked in South Africa for over 30 years.

During his career Roger Ballen has published several books and won prizes. His work has been exhibited in various international museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and The Johannesburg Art Museum in Johannesburg.
