Patrick Demarchelier is a world-renowned French fashion photographer. Responsible for countless iconic images created for publications such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, he is perhaps best known for his intimate portraits of Princess Diana that helped establish her popularity and accessible public image. He was born on August 21, 1943 in le Havre, France and, at the age of 17, was given a Kodak Eastman camera for his birthday. In 1975, he moved to New York and began working for the photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson and Jacques Guilbert, later gaining employment with Harper’s Bazaar in 1992, subsequently becoming the magazine’s principal photographer. He has shot campaigns for Dior, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and others, with his images appearing regularly on the cover of major fashion magazines. In 2007, he was honored by the French government as an Officer of Arts and Letters. Anna Wintour, the esteemed and influential long-time editor of Vogue, has described his work as “timelessly classic.” He lives and works in New York, NY.
