His work was deeply influenced by the contemporary aesthetics of the Neue Sachlichkeit. In 1932 he settled in Zurich, where he opened a studio for advertising photography and organized a photography course at the Kunstgewerbeschule, the city's design school, which he taught until 1957. Among his students there were many of the most important Swiss photographers, including Werner Bischof, René Burri, Emil Schulthess and René Grobli.
