Honhoff, Peter - Zealand with hindsight

It is raining in Zierikzee and then photographer Pieter Honhoff of the book 'Zealand with hindsight' writes below: "No Tears please.".

It's not the only caption that goes wrong. In a nice photo elsewhere in the book, with the last, unused pillars of the large dam at Schouwen, it says: "Schouwenbank Speedramp Blues". At a few milk cans: "The Sound of Milk", and under the next printed sunset "A Mound of Silk ".

De Humor is on the street at Honhoff. It remains unclear who it is intended for. Is it for the foreign tourist who comes to Zeeland and finally wants to have a nice photo book as a souvenir, or for the Zeeuw himself, who like a joke?

Sometimes one goes wrong, Freek de Jonge once exclaimed. This certainly applies to Honhoff's 'lyrical laria' in 'Zealand with Hindsight'. And that is a pity because the 144 black and white photos in the book do occasionally bear witness to a sharp view of the country and the people that populate Zeeland.

Het regent in Zierikzee en dan schrijft fotograaf Pieter Honhoff van het boek 'Zealand with hindsight' eronder: "No Tears please.".

Het is niet het enige onderschrift dat de plank misslaat. Bij een aardige foto elders in het boek, met de laatste, niet gebuikte pijlers van de grote dam bij Schouwen, staat: "Schouwenbank Speedramp Blues". Bij een paar melkbussen: "The Sound of Milk", en onder de daarnaast afgedrukte zonsondergang "A Mound of Silk".

De Humor ligt bij Honhoff op straat. Voor wie ze bedoelt is, blijft onduidelijk. Is het voor de buitenlandse toerist die in Zeeland komt en eindelijk wel eens een mooi fotoboek als souvenir wil hebben, of voor de Zeeuw zelf, die wel van een grapje houdt?

Er gaat er wel eens eentje de mist in, riep Freek de Jonge ooit. Voor de 'lyrical laria' van Honhoff in 'Zealand with Hindsight' geldt dit zeker. En dat is jammer, want de 144 zwart-wit foto's die het boek telt, getuigen zo nu en dan wel degelijk van een scherpe kijk op het land en de mensen die Zeeland bevolken.
