Helmut Newton (born Helmut Neustädter; 31 October 1920 – 23 January 2004) was a German-Australian high-fashion photographer. The New York Times described him as a "prolific, widely imitated fashion photographer whose provocative, erotically charged black-and-white photos were a mainstay of Vogue and other publications."
Born 1920 in Berlin, Germany, Newton’s Jewish heritage meant that he had to flee his home country during the Nazi rise to power. The artist settled in Australia in the 1940s, where he later set up a studio. Newton went on to photograph models Cindy Crawford and Charlotte Rampling for several well-known magazines, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Playboy, and Elle. Though he continued to work commercially throughout his life, he began creating more personal work during the 1970s. In 1999, his now-famous book SUMO, was released by TASCHEN publishing house, chronicling decades of his most iconic work. The artist died in an automobile accident on January 23, 2004 at the age of 83 in West Hollywood, CA. Today, his works can be found in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the National Library of Australia in Canberra, and the International Center of Photography in New York.

Helmut Newton, geboren als Helmut Neustädter (Berlijn, 31 oktober 1920 - Los Angeles, 23 januari 2004) was een Duits-Australisch fotograaf.
Op achttienjarige leeftijd (1938) ontvluchtte de Joodse jongeman zijn geboorteland Duitsland, vanwege de opkomst van het nationaalsocialisme, en arriveerde in Singapore. Daar werkte hij enkele jaren als persfotograaf voor de Engelstalige krant The Straits Times. In 1940 trok hij naar Australië, deed vijf jaar dienst in het Australische leger en verwierf de Australische nationaliteit in 1946. Hij ontmoette er de actrice June Brunell (artiestennaam van June Browne) die als model voor hem poseerde en in 1948 zijn echtgenote werd. June Newton zou later in de voetsporen van haar man treden en in 1970 onder het pseudoniem Alice Springs een fotografiecarrière beginnen.
Na vele reizen naar Europa en klussen voor de Britse en Australische Vogue, verhuisde hij begin jaren zestig naar Parijs. Daar zou hij de volgende decennia als modefotograaf werken voor de Franse editie van Vogue. In 1971 werd een hartaanval hem bijna fataal. Vanaf dat moment zou zijn werk persoonlijker worden. Helmut en June verhuisden in 1981 naar Monaco en brachten vanaf toen de winters door in Los Angeles.
In 2004 kwam Helmut Newton om het leven bij een eenzijdig verkeersongeval, mogelijk ten gevolge van een hartaanval.
