Daniel Masclet (1892-1969) studied classical music before starting photography with Baron de Meyer. Very early on, he turned out to be a great portrait painter and also produced still lifes close to the New Photographic Vision. In 1933 he was the organizer of the historic First International Photography Nude Fair. His discovery of the work of Edward Weston is decisive. Adept at pure photography, he produces prints (of remarkable quality) of nudes, landscapes, abstractions or street scenes, exhibited and published internationally. Until the sixties, Daniel Masclet was the central figure and the reference photographer for the French photographic community. He corresponded with his foreign counterparts such as Edward Weston or Otto Steinert. He has also opened his activity to the writing of several books of photographic theory including Reflection on the portrait in photography and has been critical in many journals.
